Identity Theft Explained

Identity Theft Prevention Bill

Friday, January 12th, 2007 at 2:25 pm by lifemic

Identity theft is now becoming the fastest growing felony in America and millions of families are becoming victims of id theft or consumer fraud every year without knowing it. The increased frequency of breaches in our security has raised red flags about the protection of our private information.  Some government officials feel it is necessary to introduce certain bills that require businesses to notify customers of data leaks in their private information. In addition, these bills would also prevent companies or federal, state and local government agencies from publicly displaying social security numbers or other private information without the person’s consent.

Senator Dianne Feinstein from California reintroduced two bills that would aim to prevent occurrences of identity theft, by making sure these proposals and regulations are enforced. She believes that the recent rise of massive data breaches proves that this legislation needs to be heard and passed now rather than postponing it for the future.  Senator Feinstein will be conducting a hearing on this and other ways to protect against identity theft early in the 110th Congress.

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006 at 8:05 pm by lifemic

This is an interesting video I recently ran across, that warns about the heigtened risk of identity fraud during this holiday shopping season. While this is a peak season for shopping and many consumers are stressfully searching for last minute gifts, it is also a peak time for identity theft. This video shares the necesary precautions that we must take while shopping during this holiday season. It warns us to be extra careful with our transactions, and to never give out too much personal or private information.

Phishing scammers really think their fishing

Friday, December 15th, 2006 at 11:03 pm by lifemic

phishing poleThe two words phishing and fishing sound the same, and to be honest with you, in some way they are very similar. Let me explain this so that I won’t have too many confused people reading this.

Phishing, is a sneaky crime that scammers use in order to steal the identity of its victims. Just like with typical fishing, in phishing, a criminal will bait its prey(or victim) with a phony email or fake telephone call that sounds very convincing. The purpose of the bait(fake email or phone call) is to get you to bite it by responding to whatever they’re telling you to do. Alot of times, these phishing criminals will get you to respond by claiming to be a representive of your current financial institute(aka. Bank). Next, they’ll ask you to visit a certain website and fill out some information that your current financial institute needs in order to continue your service. Once you do this, you are hooked! They got you!

One thing that you should know is that is that every credit card company, bank, or other financial institution, will never ask for your personal iformation via an email. These companies already have access to most of your personal records, so they do not need to solicit your info via an email. If you see any messages sent to you that fits this description, avoid it with a passion! Instantly deleted! If a legitimate company wanted to really get in contact with you, you would really know it! It would definitely not come from a silly email.

ID theft investigation leads to the raiding of 6 meat plants

Friday, December 15th, 2006 at 10:22 pm by lifemic

I just found out that this Tuesday, 12/12/2006, federal agents raided meat processing plants within 6 states and arrested an unknown number of illegal immigrants. From what I understand, the federal agents exposed a scheme in which illegal immigrants bought the social security numbers and identities of plenty of US households in order to secure work at the Greely-based meat processor Swift & Co. The operations at all Six of the Swift meat processing facilities has been temporarily shut down.

Hopefully the federal government will allow these plants to operate again by lifting the suspension off. Why? Well, not only are the hundreds of US citizens who got their identities stolen victims, but this company has become a victim as well.

The company states that they would have never hired these employees if they have known that they were committing id theft. The Swift company stated that they outsource all of their employee identification research to a government pilot program. Therefore, if we are to blame anyone, let’s blame this company.

But this news just goes to show how serious this id theft issue really is.

Knowing how serious this issue is getting, you need to protect your identity now!

Internet Auction Fraud – Researchers Are Trying To Win This Battle

Thursday, December 14th, 2006 at 7:38 pm by lifemic

Internet auction fraud, according to the Consumer Sentinel, the FTC consumer fraud’s database, was the most commonly related computer fraud issue within their database. The reports show that about 12 percent of the 431,000 computer related fraud complaints last year resulted from online auction fraud.

Online auction fraud is when a seller from an auction site either doesn’t deliver goods or sells a flawed product. Sites like Ebay, usually have a means to warn their buyers if a particular seller has created a bad experience for one of its buyers. This giant auction site has a rating system that rates every single seller. A high rating, usually demonstrates a very good and reliable seller. But researchers from Carnegie Mellon University claim that savvy fraudsters conduct a lot of transactions with their friends and use alternate names in order to secure high satisfaction ratings. This deception causes many innocent buyers to get ensnared by fraudulent sellers.

To counteract this deception, the CMU research team has developed an anti-fraud software for online auction sites. This software is a statistical software that recognizes certain patterns of improper buying and selling between buyers and sellers. If the software recognizes too many repeat dealings between a certain seller and buyer, the software will alert the user that the particular seller has a higher probability of being fraudulent. Thus, the software functions as an extra precautionary tool.

This is just another great breakthrough in the fight against online fraud and identity theft.

Beware of The Spyware Demons of ID Theft

Thursday, December 14th, 2006 at 1:38 pm by lifemic

is Spyware  If you haven’t heard, there is an enemy in cyberspace that is not as threatning as a malicious computer virus or worm. But this enemy is indeed more widespread and common then your typical computer virus.

So what am I talking about?

I am talking about what is known today as Spyware.

It has been stated by the National Cyber-Security Alliance that spyware infects more than 90% of home PCs! Therefore, 9 out of 10 people who view this blog post have spyware on them!

So how dangerous is this?

Well, let me first describe what spyware is.

Spyware refers to programs or applications installed on your computer that negatively effects the performance of your computer, as well as present some major privacy and security risks. A good spyware application  tracks and monitors all of the activities of a victim’s computer and transmits that information to a central location, which is usually the spyware creator. The more deceptive spyware records information that you type on online payment forms, such as your credit card number. They even have the ability to track and steal all of your passwords.

Anti Spyware Software

How does spyware do this?

Well, spyware has the capability of logging all of your keystrokes when you are using your PC. This sneaky enemy can determine every website you type into your browser as well as any passwords or credit card numbers.

Therefore, spyware is the perfect tool for anyone who wants to commit identity theft and fraud.

So after reading this post, you better consider using some anti spyware software to protect you and your family from these vicious blood sucking predators who take pleasure in invading your privacy. A great anti spyware software is needed in order to completely and fully protect your privacy and secure you from the possibility of identity theft and internet fraud. Alot of anti spyware software is very inefficient when it comes to identifying and removing spyware. The most deceptive spyware usually goes undetected. Therefore, you need to grab an anti spyware software that has capability of zeroing in on the most sneakiest spyware. The best types of anti spyware software are like diamonds in the rough, you should praise God for finding one. But I found a free one that you can download now by clicking here.

Shop With Caution During This Holiday Season!

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006 at 2:58 pm by lifemic

Beware of stolen identityEverybody knows that this is the time of the year when countless individuals jam the stores and mall to shop for Christmas gifts. Most people acquire major debt during this time of the year, and spend most of the following year trying to clear up the debt. Of course, this is a season of giving and everybody loves to give gifts to the one’s they love.

However, before we get totally swept away in the holiday spirit, we must also remember that this is a key season many families get hit with a case of identity theft. As wallets are opened, credit cards swiped, and checks written we fell to realize that every careless exchange of our private information opens us up to a possiblity of becoming a victim of identity theft. As sad as this may sound, many criminals, during a holiday season, look for careless individuals who aren’t aware of people looking over their shoulder for their credit card number or even leave receipts behind or may accidently drop receipts while shopping.  We must always remain watchful and convince ourselves that their is nothing wrong with being overly cautious, especially during the Christmas shopping season. We must remember to store all of our receipts in a safe protected place and shred our bills, receipts and banking statements when disposing of them.

Visit this link that explains more about identity theft prevention.

So as you continue in the joy of this holiday season and continue your shopping, please remember to guard your credit card and other private \ personal information with your life.
